Pure Financial Advisors is a fee-only registered investment advisor (RIA) committed to providing conflict-free, comprehensive financial planning. We’re looking for an experienced tax professional to join our Tax Planning department in San Diego — someone who thrives at the intersection of tax expertise and financial planning, and who takes pride in delivering clear, actionable guidance to clients.
In this role, you’ll be a key contributor to our planning process: reviewing tax returns, preparing forward-looking projections, and collaborating with Financial Advisors and Planners to help clients make smarter financial decisions.
Responsibilities:
- Analyze & Project — Review client tax documents and financial data to identify anomalies, errors, and planning opportunities; prepare projections of future tax outcomes with optimization recommendations
- Tax Planning Strategies — Model Roth conversion scenarios, evaluate charitable giving strategies (QCDs, donor-advised funds, bunching), and analyze equity compensation tax implications (RSUs, ISOs, NQSOs, ESPPs)
- Entity & Business Planning — Advise business-owner clients on whether their current entity structure (sole proprietorship, S-corp, LLC) is tax-efficient and aligned with their broader financial plan
- Research & Translate — Monitor tax law changes and pending legislation; distill complex information into clear, actionable guidance for internal teams and clients
- Collaborate — Partner with our Planning Department and Financial Advisors to ensure data inputs are accurate and complete; attend client meetings as needed to explain tax positions and answer questions
- Communicate — Draft client-facing written explanations of tax information that are accurate, accessible, and aligned with their overall financial plan
- Stay Current — Participate in internal tax-related meetings and training to keep skills and knowledge sharp
Qualifications:
- 5+ years’ recent experience in individual income tax
- Comprehensive knowledge of individual income tax returns
- Expertise in at least one additional area: pass-through entities, trusts & estates, plan administration, multi-state taxation, or foreign reporting requirements
- Familiarity with retirement plan types and investment/retirement planning concepts
- Strong written and verbal communication skills — you can explain complex tax topics to non-experts
- Logical, strategic thinker who can identify the “so what” behind the numbers
- Ability to manage a high volume of clients and cases, prioritizing effectively across competing deadlines
Preferred:
- Bachelor’s degree in business, finance, or related field. Advanced certifications a plus
- Active credential: JD, EA, CPA, CFP, or equivalent
- Experience working in a financial planning or wealth management environment (vs. a traditional CPA or tax firm)
- Proficiency with tax planning software such as Bloomberg BNA, eMoney, or similar tools
Additional Details:
- Salary Range: $100,000-$110,000 (annualized), depending on experience
- Benefit package includes health (medical, dental, and vision insurance), FSA and/or HSA plans, group and voluntary life/accidental death & dismemberment (AD&D) insurance, long-term disability insurance (LTD), a 401(k) plan with an enhanced employer match, including pre-tax, Roth and after-tax contributions, as well as generous holiday and paid time off policies.
